The real King

‘Content is King’ has been the philosophy at the heart of SEO for many years now. And it remains the single most important factor that will help you rank higher in search results whether that’s on Google, Bing or Yahoo.

Collectively they account for about 98% of the internet searches in the UK as seen in this screenshot from statista.com.

To illustrate the importance of content to Bing look at the following quote from Bing Webmaster Guidelines :

“Content

Content is what Bing seeks.  By providing clear, deep, easy to find content on your website, we are more likely to index and show your content in search results.  Websites that are thin on content, showing mostly ads or affiliate links, or that otherwise redirect visitors away to other sites quickly tend not to rank well.  Your content should be easy to navigate, rich and engaging to the visitor, and provide them the information they seek.  In many cases, content produced today will still be relevant years from now. In some cases, however, content produced today will go out of date quickly.”

Google says a great deal about the importance of quality content, for example:

“Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.”

Quality Content IS Key To Successful SEO

From the above excerpts the importance placed on good content by search engines is obvious. No amount of other SEO will affect the ranking of your website as much as your content. Citations, backlinks and other off page factors will do little good without well written, properly optimised and informative SEO content writing.

It should be remembered that search engines want to produce the most relevant and useful results from a search query. That means content that matches the searcher’s intent.

Ideally content should also come from authoritative sources. Domain and Page Authority determine how authoritative a website is and this is where off page SEO comes into play and boosts your ranking still further.

What is Quality Content?

The fundamentals of what makes good content are simple; relevant, useful & authoritative.

These are the things that matter to search engines, and specifically Google, in order for it to give search results that match the search term used (keywords).

There are, of course, many other factors taken into account both on and off page. The Google algorithms have more than 200 ranking factors but content is still king.

Other important factors of SEO content writing are:

  • producing unique, original content not copied in whole or part from other websites
  • avoiding duplicate content within your site
  • readability
  • good spelling, punctuation and grammar

Holistic SEO

As crucial as good content is it isn’t a guarantee of high rankings, particularly in more competitive sectors. The best local SEO strategy is one that has an holistic approach to SEO both onpage and off page and is achieved over the medium to longer term.

It combines great, useful content with improvements in Domain and Page Authority and other aspects of SEO to build a stronger, sustainable online presence and brand awareness.
